Leigh Schubert has been running and designing for her own label since 2002. She is all things - a mother, a successful business owner and one of South Africa’s top fashion designers.
"I always knew I wanted to be a fashion designer. When I was little, my creative Mom would help me make clothes for my Barbie dolls and in in the process taught me how to sew".
"I think for me fashion is not the beginning and end of life, I think it’s a great way to express your individuality, but it is not the only way. Gone are the days where; if bellbottoms and platforms were in you wore it - whether you liked it or not. I think in a way it makes it easier for a Designer because I can design for me and there will be people out there who buy it because they like my style and not simply because I am on trend".
Leigh is dedicated to the art of fashion and continuously challenges herself by entering into competitions and industry events. In 2006 she received the citation for best emerging South African designer at the Marie Claire Prix de Excellence Awards. When she won the Invited Designer category at the Durban Designer Collection event, she knew it was time to go out on her own. Since then she has mostly focused on Fashion Weeks including Australian Fashion week in 2009 & 2010. From there she was handpicked to take part in an installation show with nine other well known and loved Australian Designers, such as Akira Isogawa.
Leigh continues to manufacture her products with her small community of ladies in Durban, South Africa and now sells her range internationally, with a dedicated following of raving fans. We are proud to represent her here at stok. in New Zealand.
